A black feline stormed his way out of the nursery. Finally, he was done! After hour's of cleaning the black warrior was finally happy that his torture was over. Ignitingshade looked around for Amberstar, wanting to get his duties done and over with and have the orange tabby verify if the den was clean enough to her standards. Grumbling himself Igniringshade glared hungrily at the freshkill pile. A little nibble wouldn't hurt anybody, now would it? Shaking his head Ignitingshade just sat there cold, hungry, and in a very bad mood.

Otterfern happened to be in the exact same mood. She padded up to the freshkill pile, glancing at it hungrily and longingly. However, the bluish-grey she-cat knew she couldn't eat, no matter how her stomach yearned for the sweet taste. She could simply imagine it flooding her maw, however, it was untruthful, that plump vole laying on the top. She noticed Ignitingshade, however, turned away.

The tom may have been a pleasure, a distraction for the she-cat. Yet he wasn't this time. She believed that any cat in their right mind would focus on anything rather than him. Grumbling a few choice swears to herself, she picked herself up and looked around for any patrols that would make good use of her. No such luck.

PostSubject: Re: In the shade of an otter [OPEN]   In the shade of an otter [OPEN] EmptyMon Oct 10, 2016 10:05 pm

The young warrior mumbled to himself under his breath, complaining to himself with the occasional swear-word that he spat foully. His legs were numb from sitting still for long periods of time with the occasional getting up to fetch new bedding. Letting out a tired sigh Ignitingshade let out a rather loud yawn before blinking sleep from his eyes. It didn't seem like Amberstar was anywhere in the clan so having nothing better to do Ignitingshade looked around for something to do. Maybe his brother's were awake, but atlas his burning golden eyes didn't land on the black and white patched pelt of Patchstrike or the tawny gold fur of his brother, Lynxstride. Of course, Patchstrike wasn't going to be up unless Lynxstride dragged him out of his warm nest to go hunting. He highly doubted that. Lazily blinking Ignitingshade's eyes landed on Otterfern, a greyish blue she-cat. He didn't know her very well, but he was pretty sure she knew of him. Who hadn't? He was like an unwanted thorn in everybodies nest's. Yeah Ignitingshade wasn't the most pleasent compainy, but was he truly that bad? Did he come off like that? Despite not liking it Ignitingshade was actually hurt at this thought. He tried his best to fit in, but that just wasn't him. He was a cat who spoke his mind and was determined to defend his clan, no matter the cost, and yet nobody in the clan actually appreciated him enough to want to talk to him or be around him in general. Could you blame a feline who had little to no socialization when it came to other's when he was already seen as a nuesance. If he was already a nuesance why would he take the time and effort to try to connect with his clan? His brother's might love him, but Ignitingshade was no fool. He knew his sibling's got sick of his bad additude and demeanor. Who wouldn't? But that still didn't lessen the pain of feeling painsakenly out of place and unwanted. So what Ignitingshade does best when he's hurt he gave a good mouthful of sarcasim. "Am I really that horrendous that you just couldn't bare to talk to me?" He gave Otterfern a sneer in anger. He didn't mean to come off as rude or mean, after all she was his senior. However, he couldn't help his bad temper leek into his voice.

Otterfern whisked around, flattening her ears against her skull. The blue she-cat grimly frowned, working her paws into the dirt with frustration. The tom must've been in the same mood as she was. She wasn't thankful in the least that someone was sharing her pain, however, since they were bothering her slightly. "No. I'm just in a very bad mood, thank you very much," the she-cat spat. She looked away, gaze softening as she looked back to the ground.

Otterfern heard his temper, loud and clear, as a matter of fact. And she despised it. Deemed it dastardly, disgraceful. Although, the she-cat couldn't say that she wasn't the same. She was. Otterfern stood up with a yawn, then turned around to face the tom. "Maybe talking to you wouldn't be so bad." She decided quietly, and reluctantly. She then took a seat.

Ignitingshade was about to retort to her earlier comment, but stopped short when her latter comment reached his ears. His retort died on his tongue and instead looked like a fool with his mouth agap. He closed it just as quickly, eyes wide in alarm before narrowing in suspicious. What was she up to? Why was she going to talk to him? He unnoticeably shifted away from her, waiting for something to happen. His muscles tensed up as he prepared himself to flee. He was just waiting for someone to pop out and say 'suprise!', but that didn't happen... yet. Such a pessimist, the best word to describe the ink black feline. "Why would you talk to me?" He raised an eyebrow in question. A grumpy sneer on his muzzle. And that ladies and gentlemen concludes Ignitingshade, no matter what you do you'll still be bit by his venomous touch.

"Because I'm bored," the she-cat groaned. Her stomach hummed annoyingly. She glanced down at it, a creamy blue, that, much to her surprise, wasn't quite ragged just yet. "I need someone to talk to - besides, you seem as if you need a little break." Otterfern's hostility dissolved, and was replaced by the merest bit of curiosity. Her wide, owlish green eyes stared into Ignitingshade's own for a moment. The sleek black tom was a warrior, just like her... There was nothing to hold against him. Otterfern's words were usually icy fangs and claws, digging deep into the necks of others. Yet now, it seemed to vanish. She stared bleakly at the tom, insecurely. Confusedly. Curiously. Waiting for a response.

It struck her that this tomcat wasn't a time-waster, he was a genuine soul. Like her. Yet she tried to act like she had no interest in him. Her ears flicked, sincerely irritated with herself. The cold winds carried hazy whispers, mystical to the she-cat's ears. Otterfern wanted to be mad with this tom - she wanted to show him who was truly the boss.

But she couldn't.

Ignitingshade snorted at her words, of course you are. At least you can leave, he thought to himself. An unhappy from on his muzzle as he thought. His ears flicked at the sound of a growl and raised an eyebrow at Otterfern. She must be hungry, why doesn't she eat? Ignitingshade thought to himself. He knew the warrior code, not by heart, but he did know it enough to remember the importance of some of the rules. He knew she wasn't allowed to eat until her duties were done and all kits, queens, and elders were fed. Last time he checked HawkClan didn't have any elders or kits and queens for that matter. "I'm sure you could eat you know." He said stiffly, hunger gnawing in his stomach. However, he wasn't allowed to eat since Amberstar reduced his meals per day. So Ignitingshade decided only to eat when he really was hungry and eat only once a day, later in the day. "What do you want to talk about?" The black tom asked. She wanted to talk, so he'll talk. He had nothing better to do.

Otterfern murmured something beneath her breath, unrecognizable even to the pale she-cat. She was quite scrawny, and that was noticeable, and she looked up at the inky black tom. "Perhaps about how annoying the apprentices are?" the she-cat asked through gritted teeth. She was honestly glad she didn't have an apprentice, though she expected she would soon. "Look at them, so smug." Otterfern growled. The she-cat glared at the apprentices, whirling like a current around the apprentice's den. She looked at Ignitingshade through the shadowy sheath of her bluish-grey face.

Ignitingshade turned to look at the younger cats, watching them as they practiced and walked around like they owned the place. He could agree that they were annoying and it made him even more annoyed when Amberstar degraded him to the rank of apprentice. Snorting Ignitingshade rolled his eye's at one apprentices failed moves, however, he couldn't be too hard on them when he himself had been in their position. He was only nineteen moons old, going on twenty. Turning his amber gaze back to Otterfern he gave a shrug," yes, but weren't we all like that at one point? I'm pretty sure you were annoyed of me too when I was an apprentice." He gave her a wink as he friendly bantered with her. The more and more the grey she-cat was around him the more and more he loosened up. She had almost his personality, perhaps that was why he relaxed around him. She would understand him better than anyone else.

"Yeah." Chuckled the blue-grey she-cat, "But, I always believed that you would improve. You were... ahem. Slightly different - actually intelligent." Otterfern, too, glanced at the training apprentices. A few were no more than kits. The she-cat returned his wink with a knowing gaze, a bright holly green that was striking in contrast to her pale blue pelt. Then, Otterfern actually smirked. It was quite hard to get the sarcastic she-cat to grin. It was small and subtle, but it was there, spread across her narrow face. She quite enjoyed the company of this jet-black tom, and felt comfortable with him.

As she watched the apprentices longer, her amusement grew. She was certainly a senior warrior, with an attitude that needed improvement, so to say, but it seemed like her and Ignitingshade could actually be friends. At first, their small exchange might've seemed like they would get into a full-blown argument, but now they seemed to be on good terms with each other.

"Oh? How was I so different– intelligent even?" To be truthful Ignitingshade was actually curious as to why Otterfern thought he was the smartest out of the apprentices at the time. How did he stand out? He was rather a loud apprentice with a bad attitude– sassy even. Is that how he stood out? He admits he wasn't the best apprentice when it came to the warrior code and respect or even good at hunting. He did have a keen sense of smell however was absolutely terrible at hunting. His sister, Fallingpaw at the time was exceptional when it came to hunting and tracking prey. Ignitingshade was rather good at fighting and caught on quick when learning new moves. Is that what Otterfern was talking about? His excellence when it came to his venomous bite and superior size and fighting skills? If so, she must know that there we many other, more impressive cats before him. His father being one of them. The large black tom quirked an eyebrow at the she-cats subtle grin. It was nice to know she at least enjoyed his company to grin at his half assed jokes. How long would that last? That was the million dollar question.

"I can't say you were always intelligent," Otterfern admitted, going on, "But you definitely did say something when the other apprentices were acting like kits." Otterfern gave a small nod, as if she was slightly impressed. A kit came and leapt on her tail. She glared a bit and thrashed it slightly until it leapt off. It seemed impossible for the greyish she-cat to become a mother. She was about to bare her fangs, until it bounded away, leaving her with only Ignitingshade again, in a somewhat friendly conversation. The fact that it was strange for Otterfern's nature, made it seem as if it might lead to something else. They'd have to wait and see.

Ignitingshade listened carefully to Otterfern as she talked about him, of course he never noticed some of the points she made. He was however distracted when a kit came up to play on the blue-grey she-cats tail. Otterfern herself seemed to dislike the kit, ready to bare his fangs at the young kit. Ignitingshade wasn't known for his gentleness or being respectful to others, but being the oldest out of his siblings he grew up protecting them from the horror of this cruel yet beautiful world. He knew the sacrifices you have to make, how quick the world could strike you down. He wanted to preserve his siblings innocence have them think life was as glorious as it seemed. Looking away Ignitingshade looked towards his paws, his tail flicking in thought as his laid his ears on the back of his cranium. Perhaps Otterfern was correct, he was different. Always worrying at a young age or maybe it was because he understood and saw things that other kits did not. Could explain his messed up sense of thought and the more in depth philosophical side of him.

Otterfern as well remained silent, seeming to be waiting for the tom to speak. She watched as the kit scampered away, unfazed by her bad attitude. Perhaps she wished to be like the kit; so careless and unaffected by the cruelty and harshness of others. As he retreated back to the nursery, he glanced at some of the other kits. Otterfern guessed that the bond between siblings was very strong, although she had never known it herself.

She watched longingly, green gaze indescribable as she did so. You couldn't tell if it was a mix of envy, sadness, or curiosity, but it was certain that she was pondering the intellect of kits. Though they were bothersome at times, they didn't let anything get under their fur. And Otterfern guessed that was important. She was mostly like that too, but instead of ignoring it, she always shot back a cruel remark. She wasn't sure why she was like that... Her nature so different.

Looking up Ignitingshade watched Otterfern watch the kit, he couldn't tell what was in her gaze, but he could guess. Did she not have littermates? Was she an only kit to her parents? She must of, perhaps that was why she was so hostile, not having experience when it came to others. He could understand that, he too wasn't one for talking or explaining himself to others. He rather disliked it, feeling like he wouldn't be understood if anyone actually knew who he was and what he thought like. "A curiosity they are. Kits I mean," Ignitingshade meowed, finally striking up a conversation. He didn't know what else to say, plus this strange blue feline intrigued him. Enough so that he actually wanted to talk to her, something he hardly ever did, even with his siblings.

Otterfern turned her gaze ravenously away from the freshkill pile, where it had sat for only a heartbeat, to look at Ignitingshade. "Certainly," the bluish-grey feline meowed. She gazed at the tomcat, not quite staring, yet not quite judging. Her claws tugged at small grass blades, as if trying to resist a pain searing through her. But there was nothing. No injury, just a simple, yet strong rush of emotions. Her green eyes beamed with florescence, but she looked away for a moment, eyes dulling down. The she-cat then looked back up at him. Otterfern couldn't help the fact that she was feeling something, such emotion that it burned inside of her chest like a forest fire. She blinked. No apology, just silence.

(So sorry for the late reply! School seemed to dump me with tons of homework, plus I was distracted by some books... Razz)

Ignitingshade was about to pull her attention from her little daydream, but closed his mouth and instead thought better of just watching her. Analyzing and cataloging the information about her. Speaking wasn't just the only way of gaining information, the black tom had many other different methods. One thing he did notice was that Otterfern liked to stare off into nothingness while in thought. He didn't think it would be wise to yank her back to reality, he very much liked his eyes and ears, and overall flawless good looking looks. Closing his amber eyes, Ignitingshade thought to himself. He was quite as he thought, bored out of his mind. The longer he talked to the senior warrior the more he felt his words were something used to just fill the silence between to the two felines. Slowly an idea came to mind, he was so going to regret this, but he needed something to do, plus Amberstar wasn't around and he could go through the dirt place. "Do you want to go hunting? Your stomach keeps growling and you're eyeing the freshkill pile like you could swallow it whole. So shall we?" The inky tom got up, walking towards the clan's entrance before stopping. He turned his head over his shoulder and he inclined his head towards the entrance, one foot held in the air while he waited for the stormy blue-grey she-cat to reply.

Otterfern nodded gratefully. "Yes. A hunt would be nice." The bluish-grey feline said, before getting up and following the tomcat. She let a small purr escape from its prison inside her broad chest. She glanced at the thorns lining the exit to camp. She flicked her tail with a small grin playing at her muzzle. "But I'm not a hungry fox, ya know!" She unsheathed her claws playfully, and her fur fluffed up like a fox's. Her tail waved as it lay flat again, and she straightened up with a tiny smile. "Let's go." She nodded towards the exit, and padded out in long strides, flicking the tip of her long tail to beckon Ignitingshade to join her. Her fondness of the inky black tom wasn't all that great, but it was truly something.

The black tom raised an eyebrow at Otterfern analogy of not being a hungry fox. A tiny grin graced his lips at her fur and impression of a fox. "Sure you aren't. All you're missing is the red and black fur, then you'll be a full fledged fox." Ignitingshade said as he followed after her. He looked around the camp waiting to see if anyone was around, so far it looked clear. It was only a matter of time before somebody came and spoiled his fun by telling Amberstar that he left. Then again he wasn't sure who Amberstar told of his punishment besides Stagwhisker, Patchstrike, and Lynxstride. Letting out a sigh Ignitingshade glanced at Otterfern, "race you to the moors!" He said before running off through the clan's entrance.

(You can? I'm not sure.)

Otterfern charged after him with a grin, pelting down the moor and streaking past ferns. She leapt over a vine of ivy, her smirk growing wider still. "I'm a fox, you say?" She questioned playfully, tail waving. She unsheathed her claws to spring after him, back arching as she dove to the ground and leapt up again, much like a pale bluish-grey squirrel. She smiled as she met his pace. "Well," Otterfern continued, "I guess I am sly." Her pelt brushed his for a moment, but she didn't quite notice through the exciting time she was having. She was rather enjoying her time with the inky black tomcat.
